Architects designing new buildings in Hanoi's Old Quarter must contend with narrow plots and limited access to natural light. Thai A reports that one newly designed hotel is a lesson in style and creativity.

New buildings erected on the streets around Hanoi's Hoan Kiem Lake are subject to height restrictions, and space in this central area is limited. Plots of land tend to be long and narrow, which has resulted in the typical Hanoi "tube house" long, skinny buildings with narrow facades.

Located in centre of the capital, the newly built Maison d'Hanoi hotel is a stylish example of this standard tube style. A modernized classic, the hotel references Hanoi French colonial past with its Asian Art Deco façade. Inside, the mix of French colonial and Asian accents continues, with colors and decorations evoking Hanoi's long history.

Above the door frame hangs a bright red sign reminiscent of those that grace ancient Vietnamese pagodas. The lobby and reception area are bathed in golden light, and a traditional money pattern adds a sense of Oriental luxury. Gray, silver, red and white are mixed with gleaming wood. A large skylight allows light to penetrate the building's 10 storeys and adds a sense of space.

While simple, the bedrooms are elegant and luxurious, featuring extras like LCD TV screen and good-quality taps in the bathrooms. Silver spackling adds luxe to a simple brown color, while silk lamps create a warm glow.

Located in the basement, the restaurant feels intimate and warm, thanks to a creative use of light and decorative finishings. Walls feature luxurious glass panels and mirrors, while the ceilings are covered with gray fabric and brocade. Shining mirrors augment the small space, and are combined with wood, silk and stainless steel in interesting ways.

Managed by H & K Hospitality, Maison d’Hanoi features interiors designed by AA Deco, a firm known for their clever and elegant reinventions of traditional Vietnamese designs. Here, the architects and designers have optimized a narrow Old Quarter lot and created a building that suits the area’s mood and history. Maison d'Hanoi is like a glowing pearl in Hanoi's Old Quarter.
